The AxESS Seal of Inclusion is the world’s first independent certification for road races, designed to recognize marathons and endurance events that actively dismantle physical, operational, and institutional barriers for all participants.
Why Certification Matters
For decades, adaptive and underrepresented athletes have navigated unpredictable race environments-facing inaccessible registration systems, unmonitored course obstacles, and secondary financial penalties. The AxESS Seal of Inclusion changes the paradigm from passive accommodation to verified operational equity. When an event earns the AxESS Seal, it signals to athletes worldwide that the race organization has audited its operations, trained its personnel, and committed to a standard of universal design where every runner can compete with safety, dignity, and autonomy.
The Three Tiers of Certification
Beginning in 2027, AxESS will conduct independent audits of major road races across the globe. Certification is awarded across three progressive tiers based on an event’s degree of alignment with the operational standards codified in The Purple Book:

The Certification Process & Governance
Earning the AxESS Seal of Inclusion is a collaborative, expert-led journey designed to help race directors transform high-level accessibility goals into verified operational reality. The path to certification begins long before race day with a comprehensive Preliminary Audit, where our technical team evaluates digital registration workflows, physical site blueprints, and field policies against the standards codified in The Purple Book. This initial analysis leads directly into an on-site Field Evaluation, during which certified AxESS auditors assess real-time execution across the entire event weekend- from packet pick-up and EXPO navigation to start-line operations and course safety. Upon completion, events receive their formal certification alongside a tailored operational roadmap to guide future improvements.
Once awarded, the AxESS Seal remains valid for three consecutive race editions, giving organizers the multi-year stability needed to execute larger structural enhancements while requiring them to maintain audited standards year over year. Progress is never locked behind a rigid timeline: organizers holding a Bronze or Silver Seal can request a Mid-Cycle Reassessment at any point during their three-year term to showcase operational upgrades and apply for a higher tier. To preserve the integrity of the Seal and ensure total athlete trust, certification is contingent upon ongoing compliance. AxESS maintains continuous oversight and reserves the right to suspend or revoke a Seal prior to term expiration should an event introduce material regressions, unmonitored safety hazards, or fundamental departures from core accessibility standards.
