The Purple Book
Sport, at its highest level, possesses a unique power to mirror the ultimate reaches of human potential. Yet, for too long, the grandest stages of endurance running–our world-class marathons and half marathons–have maintained systemic, physical, and logistical barriers that relegate diverse populations to an afterthought.
The AxESS Purple Book is born out of a fundamental necessity to rewrite this narrative. It serves not merely as a suggestion for best practices, but as a definitive blueprint for systemic equity in endurance racing.
The standards codified within this manual are designed to bridge the gap between intent and execution. By establishing uniform, measurable criteria for registration, course safety, inclusive divisions, volunteer training, and finish-line logistics, the AxESS Purple Book provides race organizers with the tools to transition from being “accessible on paper” to being fully equitable in practice.
When we build starting lines that welcome everyone seamlessly, we do not lower the standard of the race–we elevate the standard of the sport. Together, we move forward toward a future where every athlete can chase greatness on equal ground.
